Volunteers of Myrhorod Volunteer Community carried out the action “Traditions of the Ukrainian and Jewish Cuisine”. Together with the pupils of the Teaching and Educational complex “Helicon” we prepared treat for the residents of the Home for elderly and disabled people and congratulated them on the International Day of Older Persons and Jewish New Year Rosh-Ha-Shanah . Ukrainian cuisine was presented by Poltava’s vareniki (a kind of stuffed dumpling) with sour cream. The Jewish cuisine was represented by traditional New Year’s treat: honey, apples and other fruit.
10 volunteers and 8 pupils took part in the action, 19 residents of the Home for elderly people received treat. Two days we were making ready for the action: we bought products and dishes, packed honey and apples into packets. In the morning of the action day all vareniki were cooked. It was important for the volunteers to give gifts to everyone therefore we visited every room where the disabled people lived.
It was nice to see smiles on faces of lonely people and to hear words of gratitude. This day also taught teenagers to be responsible. They managed to understand, to feel, not to turn away but to communicate kindly with the elderly people. It was a lesson of tolerance for all of us. We were on the verge of tears when residents of the Home tried to catch glances and smiles of children, when absolutely blind old woman asked a girl to give her a hand to touch her being unable to see her. Children amazed us with understanding and acceptance of the situation. We hope that this is not our last event in the Home for elderly and disabled.
